Learners at Launchpad will have the opportunity to study GCSE Art and Design as an option subject.

The qualifications are designed for learners who want an introduction to art and design and include vocational and project-based elements. It will allow learners to explore a wide variety of media including sculpture and ceramics, painting, printmaking, photography, graphics, drawing, mixed media and crafts. The qualification will appeal to learners who wish to progress onto further study or equally who want to explore their creative side.

What is Launchpad aiming to achieve through its Art curriculum?

• We aim to develop student independence, problem-solving and technical skills through inspiring projects that look at both contemporary and historical artists.
• To provide an opportunity to explore creative ways of thinking and working.
• To develop the ability to perceive the world in new ways, to find hidden patterns, to make connections between the seemingly unrelated, and to generate solutions both within art, other curriculum areas and in life.

Units of study:
The learners will study the following topics:
1. Mark Making
2. Drawing and Design
3. Mixed Media
4. Importance of research and the presentation of findings and ideas.

Assessments
Pupils are assessed throughout the year on either a self-directed or given project and an end of year 11 exam based question. There are also opportunities throughout the year to achieve additional accreditation with AQA Unit Awards in individual topics.

Progression Opportunities:
Learners who achieve this qualification could progress onto art foundation, A Level and other further study:

Photography, Illustration (books and magazines), Animation (cartoons/films), Teaching, Architecture, Interior Design. Theatre Design and Management, Film and Video Production, Product Design, Graphic Design, Fashion/Textile Design, Jewellery Design, Industrial Design, Ceramics, Graphic illustration/Magazine layout.
